Punjab has green-lit a Rs 1.25 billion project to open Model Agriculture Malls (MAMs) in every district during the 2024-25 financial year. The malls are part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s Rs 64 billion Kisan Package, billed by officials as the largest farmer support program in Pakistan’s history.

First four sites

Construction starts this month on pilot malls in Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal and Sargodha. The Agriculture Department says each location will be ready within twelve months, after which the model will roll out across the province.

What farmers will find

  • Certified seed, fertilizer and crop medicines at posted government rates
  • A machinery rental corner for tractors and implements
  • Soil-testing kiosks plus a mini-lab for instant nutrient advice
  • Demonstration plots that show new seed varieties and water-saving methods
  • An advisory desk where agronomists answer questions and schedule field visits

Why the project matters

Officials note that many smallholders travel long distances for supplies and often face counterfeit products. By gathering vetted vendors under one roof, the malls aim to cut costs, raise yields and fuel local jobs. The initiative will also convert crowded open-air markets into clean, organized centers with clear price boards.

The budget

Planning documents list a cost of Rs 1.171 billion, while new promotional posters round that figure to Rs 1.25 billion to cover design upgrades. Funding is entirely capital expenditure and will be released in phases over the fiscal year.

Looking ahead

The Agriculture Department will publish quarterly progress reports and yield data once the first malls open. Officials say lessons from the pilot sites will guide layout tweaks before construction begins in the remaining districts.
