Lahore, Pakistan (June 1, 2025): The Punjab Seed Corporation has unveiled a generous subsidy package for its hybrid maize fodder seeds, branded as “Shehzor.” Beginning this week, farmers across the province can purchase a 20-kilogram bag of certified Shehzor maize fodder seed for just PKR 3,300, a significant reduction from the usual market price.

Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif praised the initiative, stating that “ensuring affordable, high-quality seed is crucial for boosting animal feed production and supporting rural livelihoods.” Agriculture officials noted that Shehzor seeds are specially bred to produce high yields of nutritious maize fodder. This discount is part of the provincial government’s ongoing effort to lower input costs for livestock farmers.

Why Choose Shehzor Maize Fodder Seed?

  • High Yield: Shehzor seeds are engineered to deliver greater biomass per acre, allowing farmers to harvest more green fodder in a single season.
  • Nutrient-Rich Feed: Maize fodder grown from Shehzor seeds has an optimal protein and fiber balance, which promotes healthier livestock and higher milk production.
  • Disease Resistance: These seeds are tested for resilience against common fungal and viral diseases, reducing the risk of crop loss.

According to Punjab Seed Corporation’s Managing Director, Mr. Aslam Khan, “The Shehzor hybrid has proven performance data. Under proper irrigation and soil conditions, farmers can expect up to 30 percent more fodder compared to conventional maize varieties.”

How to Access the Subsidized Seeds

Farmers interested in purchasing the discounted Shehzor seed should visit any registered seed center or agriculture extension office in their district. Proof of land ownership or a livestock-farming registration document is required. Supplies will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The subsidy will remain in effect until stocks are exhausted.

Authorized Distribution Points:

  • Punjab Seed Corporation Offices in all districts
  • Certified agriculture extension centers
  • Select rural development stores

Impact on Rural Economies

Livestock farming accounts for nearly 50 percent of farm income in Punjab. By lowering the cost of essential animal feed inputs, the government aims to stimulate dairy and beef production. In turn, this subsidy is expected to strengthen supply chains for milk and meat processing industries.

A dairy farmer from Okara, Mr. Tariq Hussain, shared his perspective:

“Shehzor seeds have doubled our fodder yield in past seasons. With this new price, I can expand my herd without worrying about feed shortages.”

Officials say the Punjab Seed Corporation will monitor uptake rates and may extend similar subsidy programs for other high-value seeds later this year. Continued government support for certified seed distribution is expected to drive productivity gains, ensure food security, and improve livelihoods for thousands of smallholder farmers.
