Lahore, September 23, 2024 — Punjab Agriculture Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani announced new efforts to boost onion and tomato farming in Punjab. The government is launching a Rs6 billion pilot project to increase both seasonal and off-season cultivation of these key vegetables.
During a meeting at the Agriculture House, the minister said that 33 groups of 450 farmers would cultivate crops on 2,500 acres. The goal is to ensure a year-round supply of affordable, high-quality vegetables for the public.
To support farmers, the government will provide modern machinery and solar-powered systems at a subsidized rate. Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani emphasized the importance of connecting farmer groups with local businesses, value-added industries, and international markets. The World Bank will assist with financial support for seeds, nursery plants, machinery, and cold storage.
Punjab Agriculture Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo added that the project aims to increase onion production by 28,500 tons and tomato production by 39,000 tons. The government will also conduct training programs and set up demonstration plots to encourage farmers to participate.
This initiative is expected to enhance the availability of fresh vegetables and boost the agricultural economy in Punjab.
